PARK GUIDE: 2018 Unofficial Guide to Great Escape & Hurricane Harbor Water Park (NOW OUTDATED)

Every year, my family and I purchase Six Flags season passes. The closest property to us is Six Flags’ Redheaded Step-child, The Great Escape, and after all these years of visiting, I figured I’d create a Guide to The Great Escape & Splashwater Kingdom!

How to Get There

The Great Escape is easily accessible. It’s located off of I-87 Adirondack Northway in Queensbury, NY., and is 5 minutes south of a tourist town known as Lake George. It is also 2 hours from Montreal, Quebec, and 45 minutes to the Capital of New York State, Albany.

Staying The Night

There are many hotels in the Lake George area. One major property, the Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Waterpark, is actually owned and operated by Six Flags. This hotel is Adirondack themed, and reminiscent of Great Wolf Resorts. There are other options such as the Queensbury Hotel, Country Inn & Suites, Georgian Lakeside Resort, and many camping options.

Note: Six Flags Season Pass holders get exclusive discounts when they stay in the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Water park in season.

Rides & Attractions

The Great Escape has over 40 rides & attractions. This includes a fantastic wooden coaster known as The Comet, which was built by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters in 1927 and relocated in 1994. In addition to that, the park has four more coasters: an Intamin Bobsled ride called Alpine Bobsled, a standard Vekoma Boomerang known as Flashback, an Arrow corkscrew coaster named Steamin Demon (my first coaster with inversions), and an Arrow mine train known as Canyon Blaster. The park also includes old Storybook Houses from back when it was a tourist trap known as Storytown USA, which is a nice touch.

Also worth noting is an accident that occurred on the Sky Ride, a slow moving gondola, in 2017. New York & Warren County, officials have stated this was caused by human error, and the ride continues to operate safely today.

The Great Escape

Food at The Great Escape is mediocre at best. The park serves typical theme park food. The largest restaurant/cafeteria, “Alpine Fest Haus”, serves cheeseburgers, hot dogs, mac & cheese (I don’t recommend getting that terrible mac), and German burgers to fit in with the loose Bavarian theme. In Ghost Town they serve chicken wings, beer, pot roast sandwiches, and potato skins.

Splashwater Kingdom

Food in Splashwater Kingdom is also just okay. Your options are pizza, cheeseburgers, or nothing. You’re better off leaving the waterpark and coming back if you want a meal. However, they do offer Dippin Dots, ICEEs, and bread sticks as some decent snacks. The ICEE is the best choice, in my opinion.

Splashwater Kingdom

Although poorly designed, Splashwater Kingdom is still a nice water park. It is split on a hill between Upper and Lower sections. The upper section includes a toilet bowl side, tornado, splash pad, lazy river and 3 watersides called Kingdom Crusades. There is another called Black Cobra, but I’ve only seen it open once this year. The lower section includes a water playground, wave pool, and a slide complex. The complex has one drop box slide, 4 mat racers, and the new for 2017 body slides called Bonzai Pipelines.

Other Attractions in the Area

There are many attractions in the area surrounding The Great Escape. The Factory Outlets of Lake George is a great place to shop; it includes stores such as Adidas, GAP, L.L. Bean, Coleman, Lindt Chocolates,  and Izod. Another attraction is the Million Dollar Beach, which is right in the heart of the village. You can also check out Fort William Henry, a beautiful historical site. There is also mini golf in the area, as well as many campsites.
