Shanghai Disney Resort’s Latest Expansion

Disney Parks Blog recently revealed a huge amount of details about Zootopia, the park’s newest themed land. The post is accompanied by tons of concept art for everything from the land’s flagship attraction, Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, to all sorts of dining experiences guests will encounter.

Frannie Guan, Associate Manager of External Communications at Shanghai Disney Resort and the author of the Disney Parks Blog post, claimed that the information on the land was revealed due to the close proximity of Destination D23. With that event on the horizon, I’d expect we’ll hear even more about Zootopia once it arrives.

Zootopia: Hot Pursuit

The first pictures in the article include posters for the new Zootopia: Hot Pursuit attraction and a Zootopia concert featuring Gazelle. Hot Pursuit will be a trackless dark ride where guests will be recruited by the Zootopia Police Department. A fair amount of the plot was revealed in the blog post, being that the ride is set after the movie and takes place during Zootopia Day, where everyone is gathered for a celebration that includes the aforementioned Gazelle concert. In the queue, riders will encounter animatronics for various characters in the show as part of an “orientation” at the police department.

During the orientation, an alarm will start blaring and guests will head to another room where they learn that Gazelle has been kidnapped and officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are assigned to the case. Your goal is to provide back-up for them while riding in a police car-themed ride vehicle.

Throughout the ride, guests will be engulfed in the biomes of Zootopia. Some of these include Mystic Springs Oasis, Sahara Square, the Rainforest District and Tundra Town (pictured above). Each will feature important plot points which lead riders to solving the mystery of Gazelle’s disappearance.

What to Eat in Zootopia

There will most likely be a number of places to grab a bite in Zootopia, but the one highlighted in the article is Jambeaux’s Cafe. This ice cream shop can be seen in the movie, and now guests will be able to try it out for themselves. The menu includes, but is certainly not limited to, a paw-shaped popsicle, a “big” donut, some sort of berry-filled pie and a chocolate-covered marshmallow. There will also be regular popsicles and ice cream available.

Shop til you Hopps

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Disney trip if you didn’t grab yourself a souvenir. Shanghai Disney’s newest land will have plenty of collectibles and knick-knacks from the movie to enjoy. Fashions by Fru Fru, which is owned by a character of the same name, is located off of an area called “Mane Street.” It’ll be the main place to find all sorts of gifts and products, all with the Zootopia theme. The Parks Blog article also noted that the Zootopia Cute collection, a line of popular products in Shanghai Disney Resort, will be featured at the store.

Meet and Greet with the Characters from Zootopia

Arguably the biggest draw to Zootopia for some will be the chance to meet characters from the movie. The land will boast all sorts of greeting areas and live-entertainment in which guests can see Fru Fru, the Hopps family, Flash the Sloth and many more popular characters.

For those who saw the Great Moments of History with the Muppets, a street show in Liberty Square in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, some of these character performances might look a little familar. Just like in that show, characters will peer down from windows in the streets to say hello and interact with the audience.

There will also be a selfie spot at the Zootopia Recruitment Station where guests can take photos with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, the two main characters from the movie. There will be no shortage of characters to meet in Zootopia, which is something that will most likely make the land feel more vibrant and lived in.

Disney has confirmed Zootopia will open by the end of 2023. With plenty to see, do and ride, it’s looking like the new land will be another hit at Shanghai Disney Resort. We’ll be sure to post an update when an official opening date is announced. Be sure to subscribe to stay in the loop when new information is released!
