Galactic Starcruiser Transforms into Walt Disney Imagineering Offices

Well, it’s official. The immersive Star Wars hotel at Walt Disney World will not be repurposed into anything for resort guests. Instead, the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be turned into Walt Disney Imagineering offices.

The short-lived resort opened in March 2022 and closed in September 2023. It was unlike anything seen before, being an immersive experience where guests would stay aboard for two nights in a cruise-like setting. The building, dubbed the Halcyon starcruiser “in-universe,” sits close to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and allowed guests to travel to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during one of the days. It was praised for letting guests experience what it’s like to be a part of the Star Wars universe.

That said, it was far from perfect. The experience varied in cost depending on the day, but generally was $1,200 per day, per person. This is much more expensive than the other resorts at Walt Disney World, despite not being able to visit the theme parks (other than to briefly travel to Galaxy’s Edge) and barely being outdoors the entire time. Another huge point of criticism were the rooms, which were generally very small and featured one regular bed and one tiny bunk bed. This would be acceptable on a regular cruise, but most didn’t understand why the rooms were built so small when the building was on land.

The Starcruiser had a hard time reaching capacity due to it’s high cost and lack of interest, so it shut down September 30, 2023. That brings us to today, where The Wrap reports that the former hotel will be transformed into Imagineering offices. Walt Disney Imagineering, the group responsible for bringing the various attractions at Disney to life, have various buildings around the property, and this appears to be their latest.

Apparently, these new offices will serve as a hub for the new expansions coming to Walt Disney World in the future. Right now, there are plans for a Tropical Americas land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a villains-themed land and Cars area at Magic Kingdom, Monsters, Inc. land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and more.

Hopefully this development means Imagineering is gearing up to build these new lands as fast as possible. Still, with guests not being allowed in any part of the Galactic Starcruiser building for the foreseeable future, it is a bit disappointing that this unique failed experiment isn’t being changed into anything new for visitors to enjoy.

. . .
