Re-Imagining Fantasyland

In case you missed it, the latest series of articles I’m writing centers around taking the current lands in the Magic Kingdom and “re-imagining” them into either a new version of that land or a completely different land altogether. So far, I’ve overhauled Frontierland into New Orleans Square, Tomorrowland into Discoveryland, and Liberty Square into The Realm of Villains, Today, we’re taking a look at Fantasyland.

In this “makeover”, I want to keep to the original theme of Fantasyland. That is, I still want it to feel like a home for the various Disney Princess movies and the like. Also, instead of overhauling the entire land, I’m going to keep the attractions that are a part of the “New Fantasyland” expansion. This includes rides like Seven Dwarves Mine Train and The Little Mermaid, and restaurants like Be Our Guest and Gaston’s Tavern. I will also not be including Storybook Circus in this article, as I want to save it for another time. Finally, I’m not going to touch Cinderella’s Castle, since it acts as the centerpiece of the entire park.

Here is my plan to “re-imagine” the front part of Fantasyland into Fantasy Courtyard.

“it’s a small world”

With Small World being situated right next to the Tangled themed bathrooms, I think it makes perfect sense that it should be re-themed to a Tangled boat ride named Journey of Light: The Story of Tangled. Tangled doesn’t get nearly enough representation in the parks, and a boat ride would be very fitting since one of the most popular scenes of the movie is Flynn and Rapunzel on a boat watching the lanterns. The ride would mainly be a retelling of the movie’s story, similarly to Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid. The exterior of the ride would be re-made to look like the main castle from the movie, instead of keeping the ugly tent exterior that Small World has.

Peter Pan’s Flight

I’m honestly not a big fan of Peter Pan’s Flight, so I’m fine with getting rid of that theme completely. Since I have to keep the hanging dark ride system, I would replace the theme with a far less popular Disney animated film, Treasure Planet. The movie features many flying pirate ships, making it a perfect fit for the current ride system. Since the movie isn’t very popular, I would choose to create a new, original storyline based on the world that Treasure Planet takes place in. Maybe some characters would appear, but for the most part it would act as a tour around the different planets. Just like Peter Pan, most of these planets would be portrayed as scale models. The ride, named Treasure Planet: Set Sail, would also use projection mapping to make it seem like riders are warping from planet to planet.

Pinocchio Village Haus

Pinocchio Village Haus is adjacent to Small World. Since I’m replacing Small World with a Tangled ride, I think it makes sense to replace Village Haus with a Tangled restaurant. It would be named The Snuggly Duckling after the tavern seen in the movie, and would be as close of a replica to that as possible.

Fantasy Fair

Fantasy Fair is a small shop in between Peter Pan and PhilharMagic. It sells all sorts of random gifts, such as clothing and pins. Since it’s situated next to what will now be a Treasure Planet ride, I think it would be nice to theme this shop to lesser known Disney animated films. A perfect name for this store would be Hidden Gems.

Mickey’s PhilharMagic

PhilharMagic is a rather dated 4D film, and it needs to go. In it’s place I would like to put a 4D film that combines every Disney Princess into one story, similarly to how we saw them together in Ralph Breaks the Internet. The plot could be them having to save a brand-new princess who was captured by some unknown villain. They could even have some awesome Avengers-style team up shots! I would name this show The Power of a Princess.

Prince Charming’s Regal Carrousel

There’s nothing much to Prince Charming’s Regal Carrousel, as it’s just a simple carrousel. I don’t feel that Prince Charming is necessarily a relevant character anymore, so I would rename it to Fairytale Carrousel and add artwork from all the classic Disney Princess films.

Princess Fairtale Hall

This building is currently used for meeting the Disney Princesses. It should stay as a meet and greet area, but I think it would be nice to be able to meet both Disney princesses and princes. It can be renamed to Fantasy Courtyard Hall of Royalty.

The Friar’s Nook

The Friar’s Nook is the beginning of the current Winnie the Pooh section of Fantasyland. This might be a spoiler for the rest of the article, but I plan to change this area into a Zootopia mini-land. I would re-theme Friar’s Nook to the Jumbeaux’s Café on Fantasy Courtyard, which is the name of the ice cream parlor and cafe that Elephants liked too eat at. This wouldn’t be a replica of the one in the movie though. Instead, it would be a “newly opened” branch in the Fantasy Courtyard.

Storybook Treats

Storybook Treats is a small counter service stand. Like Friar’s Nook, we’ll re-theme this to The Cloven Hoof, another restaurant in Zootopia. This restaurant was only mentioned in The Art of Zootopia book, so it would be open to interpretation as to what kind of food it could serve.

Hundred Acre Goods

Hundred Acre Goods is a gift shop at the end of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Therefore, it will be changed to a gift shop at the end of the Zootopia ride. The store will be renamed to Made in Zootopia, and will feature all sorts of gifts based on the movie.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is a short dark ride. As I’ve stated, I would like to change this to a Zootopia: A Wilde Ride! (yes, that’s a nod to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride). It would be all about Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde tracking down a thief who stole some sort of important possession from Cinderella’s Castle, like a crown or something. The ride would sadly be pretty short due to Pooh’s track length, but I think adding some projection mapping and other interesting technology could make it very enjoyable.

Mad Tea Party

Mad Tea Party is a teacup flat ride. I would continue the Zootopia theme to this ride, with a rename to Critter Spinners. Each ride vehicle would be themed to a different animal that lives in Zootopia.

Cheshire Cafe

Cheshire Cafe is a small counter service restaurant next to a Meet and Greet area for Merida from the Disney/Pixar animated film Brave. Instead of adding it to the Zootopia area, I would rather have it become Bear Claws, a Brave themed restaurant that sells delicious pastries and other sweets.

Those are my ideas for Re-Imagining Fantasyland! Obviously, not every idea is entirely realistic, but that’s all part of the fun. Next I will be Re-Imagining Storybook Circus. Stay tuned!
