Re-Imagining Storybook Circus

In case you missed it, the latest series of articles I’m writing centers around taking the current lands in the Magic Kingdom and “re-imagining” them into either a new version of that land or a completely different land altogether. So far, I’ve overhauled Frontierland into New Orleans SquareTomorrowland into DiscoverylandLiberty Square into The Realm of Villains, and Fantasyland into Fantasy Courtyard. Today we’re taking a look at Storybook Circus.

Yeah I know, Storybook Circus is technically a part of Fantasyland. However, I think the theming of the area is different enough to warrant a separate article. This will definitely be the shortest one so far, as the land doesn’t have much to do.

I plan to completely change the theme of Storybook Circus to something very similar to its predecessor. For those who don’t know, Storybook Circus used to be Mickey’s Toontown before the New Fantasyland Re-Theme in 2012. I want to go with a similar Mickey & Friends theme, but have it stylized to the new Mickey Mouse cartoons (the ones that inspired Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway). I think designing an entire land that looks like those cartoons would be beautiful and a fresh take on the “Toontown” theme.

Without further ado, here’s how I would “Re-Imagine” Storybook Circus into Mickey & Friends Fantabulous Funfair: Featuring Goofy’s Potato Land.

Dumbo the Flying Elephant

Dumbo is one of three aerial carrousel rides in the Magic Kingdom. I would love to remove it, but one of the rules I’ve set in place is I can’t replace a ride with something completely different. Therefore, I want to change the ride’s vehicles from Dumbo to cartoonish-looking airplanes for a ride titled Launchpad’s Sky School. They will all be receiving “flying lessons” from Launchpad McQuack, the pilot/general guy from DuckTales (I don’t really know what his actual title is, as I’ve never seen DuckTales). Obviously, Launchpad is from the DuckTales animated series and NOT the new Mickey Mouse cartoons, but I think that provides the perfect opportunity for a crossover between these two worlds. I would love to see the different characters from DuckTales in the Mickey Mouse-style animation, and this ride would be the perfect place to start.

Big Top Souvenirs

Big Top Souvenirs is a giant circus-themed gift shop that sells all sorts of random Disney items and collectables. I would like to narrow down the type of merchandise they sell here to only Mickey & Friends related stuff, and rename the shop to Mickey Mouse’s World of Color. The idea for this gift shop would be that it features merchandise from all animation styles of Mickey Mouse. The gift shop would be divided up like a pie-chart, with each section representing a different era of animation. The first section would be from the old black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons, and the last section would be from the most recent cartoons that the land is based off of.

Pete’s Silly Slideshow

Pete’s Silly Slideshow is a meet-n-greet area where Mickey & Friends are dressed up in magician costumes. It’s currently being used as a rest area during the Covid-19 pandemic, which shows how unimportant it actually is. What I think would be amazing is if they had a daily rotation of different Mickey-related characters that repeated every month. The venue could be known as The Fantabulous Funfair’s Celebrity Watch. I don’t know how feasible having a different character every day is, but I think it would add a reason to revisit this part of the land more often.

Casey Jr. Splash ‘N’ Soak Station

Unlike the other Disney parks, the Magic Kingdom’s Casey Jr. attraction is a small splash pad. This doesn’t give me a lot to work with, but like I said I can still change the theme. I would like to see the splash pad be centered around a modernized version of Steamboat Willie. I think it would be really cool to see the classic cartoon boat in the new animation style, and it would also be a fitting landmark for a water-based attraction like a splash pad. It’s new name would be Steamboat Willie’s Waterworks.

The Barnstormer

The Barnstormer is a junior roller coaster themed to Goofy flying an airplane (because somehow he’s received his pilot license). The “Goofy” part of this ride still fits in the land, but because of how I re-themed Dumbo, the “airplane” part doesn’t. As I stated at the beginning of the article, this new land features Potato Land, which is the fictional amusement park in one of the new Mickey Mouse cartoons. Goofy is obsessed with this park, so it would be fitting to re-theme this ride to look like it belongs there. I would name it Goofy’s Potato Cannon Coaster and re-design the lift hill to have a cartoonish cannon-like mechanism enclosing it. The coaster cars would be modeled to look like potatoes and would look like they were shooting out of the cannon when they reach the top of the lift hill. The remainder of the ride layout would remain the same, but the queue would be re-themed to feature various potato puns and pictures of other potato rides that parody Disney attractions.

Walt Disney World Railroad Station

Not much has to be re-themed here, because at the end of the day it’s just a station for the Walt Disney World railroad. I think re-naming it The Potato Land Station and adding some funny potato/train humor (whatever that means) would do the job.

Those are my ideas for Re-Imagining Storybook Circus! Obviously, not every idea is entirely realistic, but that’s all part of the fun.
