The park will be situated within Yomiuriland, which is currently Tokyo’s largest amusement park. The three companies will come together to form a new company, PokéPark Kanto LLC, which will own and operate the new Pokémon theme park.

The Pokémon Company is currently owned by three companies: Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc. This means that PokéPark Kanto LLC will have at least five different companies with some sort of stake in the project.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, which is a Tokyo-based newspaper, PokéPark Kanto will feature Pokémon events and attractions in a natural environment. If this sounds familiar, it’s because Yomiuriland and The Pokémon Company previously worked together to create Pokémon Wonder, an experience in which guests would search for creations resembling Pokémon in nature.

Pokémon Wonder sat on 48,000 square feet of forest behind Yomiuriland, making it the perfect place to spot Pokémon created from leaves, branches and other parts of nature. The experience ran from 2021 to early 2022, leaving a Pokémon-shaped hole that PokéPark Kanto will hopefully fill. That said, it is unclear if PokéPark Kanto will utilize the same land.

Interestingly, the name PokéPark Kanto is a reference to two important parts of Japan and Pokémon’s history. Yomiurland and Tokyo itself are located in the Kanto region of Japan, and various Pokémon games take place in a fictionalized version of this region. The first Pokémon video games, 1996’s Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Green Version, take place in Kanto. The region has also appeared in 11 other Pokémon games, including 2018’s Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee on Nintendo Switch.

PokéPark Kanto has no set opening date. According to the accompanying press release, the park hopes to “create a space where Pokémon fans from all over the world can gather in this area rich in nature, experience Pokémon, and have fun together, transcending national, regional, and language barriers,” once it eventually opens. This sounds vaguely similar to Pokémon GO, the popular AR gaming app that allows users to find and catch Pokémon in the real world. We theorize that PokéPark Kanto will collaborate with Pokémon GO in some way to allow for greater interaction during and after a visit to the park.

Stay tuned to learn when you can spot–and maybe catch?–them all at PokéPark Kanto!
